Description:
In 1863, Frederick Douglass confronted Abraham Lincoln in a series of speeches and then in person at the White House, accusing him of "tardiness, hesitation, and vacillation" in prosecuting the War. "Mr. Lincoln, there can be no war but an Abolition war. No peace but an Abolition peace." Of particular concern to Douglass were the atrocities being perpetrated against Black Union soldiers who were captured and killed by the Confederates. The presentation will discuss the background of this confrontation and include a performance of some of Douglass's speeches and a scene from "Lincoln at Congo Square," a full-length screenplay by Rick D. Bailey, Esq.
